"I dream of building a community of dancers in a forsaken place amidst nature. A place where nothing exists, except dance. A place where you breathe, eat, sleep, dream, talk, imagine - dance. A place called Nrityagram." The dreamer? The extraordinary Protima Gauri Bedi (1948-1998). Protima Bedi, a flamboyant socialite in Bombay, found her purpose in life completely turned around when she saw a guru performing the Odissi Indian dance. She devoted herself to studying Odissi - became a famous dancer and then, in 1988, built the groundbreaking Nrityagram Dance Village near Bangalore in India. Her aim: to preserve Classical Indian dance.
The film largely focuses on her legacy: the renowned school and beautiful dancers of Nrityagram Dance Ensemble. It showcases the successful continuance of the company after her tragic death in a mudslide while on a pilgrimage and how they contribute to the growing appreciation of Indian classical dance in India and around the world.
